Gov. Jerry Brown Declares an End to California Drought Following Months of High Precipitation

March 30, 2011

Los Angeles -- It is expected that Gov. Jerry Brown will announce today the official end to California’s drought, which has intensified the negative water supply impact of the state’s critical long-term water issues for the last three years. The Southern California Water Committee’s Executive Director Richard Atwater issued the following statement regarding that expected announcement.

“The Southern California Water Committee is pleased to see the end of this drought, which has added strain for so many of California’s water users and purveyors over the last few years. This year’s unusually high level of precipitation has bolstered our region’s water supply in the short term, and eased the pressure on water agencies that have struggled to provide adequate water supplies to those who depend on them.

However, we must remember that our state’s toughest water challenges lie ahead of us, not behind. The deterioration of California’s water infrastructure continues to threaten the security of our water future, regardless of precipitation levels. That’s why it’s crucial that California’s water leaders and stakeholders remain actively engaged in the effort to move forward with the Bay Delta Conservation Plan, and continue to work together toward a reliable water supply for all Californians. The Southern California Water Committee looks forward to continuing our participation in that important effort. ”
