SCWC Statement Regarding National Research Council Report on BDCP
May 5, 2011
Los Angeles – The National Research Council (NRC) released a report today analyzing a draft of the Bay Delta Conservation Plan (BDCP) that was released in November 2010. Stakeholders across the state have been working actively on the BDCP since that time, and they will continue to make progress as the year goes on.
“The Southern California Water Committee shares the National Research Council’s strong commitment to finding a long-term fix for the Delta that utilizes the best available science. However, the fact that the NRC report is based on a draft working document undermines its conclusion and findings. The NRC was tasked with an unenviable job — producing a report based on an incomplete and continually evolving draft of the Bay Delta Conservation Plan.
That said, we are confident that the Brown Administration and the federal agencies will be able to incorporate the NRC report’s recommendations to ensure that the BDCP is based on the best available science.
Our organization remains confident in the BDCP process, and we look forward to continuing our collaborative work with the Brown Administration, federal agencies and the multitude of other stakeholders who share our commitment to ensuring the long-term environmental health of the Delta.”
